Gentle Treatment for Mastitis Spectrum
Service Description
Therapeutic breast ultrasound is a soothing, gentle, non-invasive, silent sound wave therapy applied to the breast(s) to reduce pain and swelling in the deeper breast tissues related to mastitis spectrum (ductal narrowing -- formerly known as clogged ducts, engorgement, inflammatory mastitis, bacterial mastitis, phlegmon, abscess, galactocele, and subacute mastitis) Therapeutic ultrasound for lactation uses thermal energy to reduce inflammation and relieve swelling and is a recommended treatment option from the Academy of Breastfeeding Medicine. * Comfortable, relaxing and gentle therapy. * Increases blood flow to the affected area promoting soft tissue healing, reducing inflammation and improving milk flow. * Ideal for narrowed milk ducts (formerly know as clogged ducts) that persist longer than 24-48 hours. * Can reduce risk of future mastitis spectrum symptoms. * Softening and decreased pain are often felt immediately. Contraindications / Precautions for Treatment: • Acute mastitis not treated with antibiotics for at least 24 hours • Pacemaker presence • Vascular disease or ischemic tissue presence • Known cancer in region • Breast implants (precaution) • Healing fracture site 1 treatment daily for 2-3 days typically improves symptoms. We will make a plan for frequency of therapeutic ultrasound for lactation based on symptoms and the care plan you are working through with your IBCLC. **If you have an urgent need outside of my standard clinic days, please call or email!**
